New Model for Music Teacher Professional Development

The Online Teacher Education Center of the Come Children Sing Institute has launched an online course for music teachers that offers a new model for professional development in music education. “Giving Voice to Children’s Artistry” coaches music teachers throughout the ten week course, with their own classroom serving as their teaching/learning laboratory. Their own students demonstrate the principles of music learning addressed in online materials, while each week’s lessons develop student and teacher readiness for subsequent weeks.

This dynamic combination of online study and classroom application through ten weeks, with ongoing pedagogical support, promotes long-term professional growth. The course is offered for professional development hours, CEUs, CPDUs, or graduate credit, providing a convenient and inexpensive option to costly workshops, conferences and seminars.

This unique course brings together the process of music learning and the development of choral artistry, focusing on children ages 7-13. It is designed so that teachers can tailor required activities to their own children. The course is taught by Mary Ellen Pinzino, director of the Come Children Sing Institute, whose extensive writing for this course feeds teachers throughout the ten weeks, while her many compositions feed the children musically. CEUs are offered through Indiana University/Purdue University, Indianapolis, and graduate credit is offered through Quincy University, Quincy Illinois.
