Each new stage of your child’s development affects day-to-day life and music activities as well. Developing independence and the need for a child to do things his own way can take many guises. You may find that your child will not settle down for a book, a song, or even a snack. On the other hand, you may find that your child will settle down for a book, song, or snack, as long as it is his idea. You may find that the computer has to be off limits to pounding fingers, or, you may find that your child will sit with you at the computer for music activities, directing which activity to play and when to repeat it.
If your child runs away from favorite books or music activities, don’t assume that he is no longer interested, but rather, that independence is the driving force. You may find that playing CCS Activities in another room with a CD or iPod will offer new options for independent play while listening. It will also invite your little one to assert his independence by commanding you to activate the CD or iPod so he can “play music.” Weathering the storm of developing independence can be a challenge, but your self-directed little one will not only move away from favorite activities, but eventually come back with new maturity and new musical growth.
