Rhythm Discrimination Activities take a child further on the journey of music learning. A child who is familiar with various meters, and with Rhythm Syllables in those meters, is ready to aurally compare meters “next to each other” in sound and discover that the meters sound different. A child learns what something is by learning what it is not. Rhythm Discrimination Activities guide the child in hearing the identifying characteristics of a meter. It is not important that a child recite the name of a meter, but rather, learn to aurally distinguish one meter from another, with Rhythm Syllables reflecting, representing, and reinforcing the differences.
