Parents with young children often share with other parents the merits of a toy, preschool or product for young children. It is more difficult to address another parent when you don’t respect their parenting. The art of parenting the young child’s developing sense of self, for example, is not common knowledge. Nor is the art of “Parenting Music.”
How does one address a friend who is convinced that her child is learning music through videos, CDs, and musical toys? How does one address a friend who starts a preschooler on a musical instrument? How does one address a friend who claims her child is learning music in preschool or in a recreational music class?
The young child’s music potential is one of every child’s greatest gifts, yet it is commonly ignored, abused, and neglected. Parents simply do not understand their child’s musical needs nor the process of musical growth and development. Let us become advocates for the young child’s musical gifts and help other parents understand their child’s musical needs and the wonder of their child’s musical brilliance.
